Why Clean Core?
Design future-proof SAP landscapes
What is SAP's Clean Core strategy?
The Clean Core strategy is based on five guiding principles:
- Standardized business processes: Map processes to the SAP standard as much as possible to reduce complexity.
- Extensibility: Extensions are implemented decoupled from the SAP core – either “on-stack” (within the SAP system) or “side-by-side” (on the SAP Business Technology Platform, BTP).
- Data Quality: Governance and compliance for high-quality, secure data.
- Integration: Modern, API-based integration without tight coupling.
- Efficient operations: Automation and high availability with minimal effort.

Why is SAP pursuing the Clean Core strategy?
Some time ago, SAP announced its Cloud First and Clean Core strategy. Over the years, many SAP environments have grown through customizations, in-house developments, and integrations that are difficult to maintain. The result: increasing complexity, high costs, and upgrades that are difficult to perform. With the Clean Core strategy, SAP aims to address these challenges and prepare companies for innovation and the cloud.
Why is Clean Core so important?
A “clean core” means that the SAP system remains as close to the standard as possible, and extensions are implemented in a way that does not hinder updates and innovations.
The benefits:
- Faster innovation cycles
- Lower technical debt
- Easier maintenance and upgrades
- Better data quality
- Foundation for AI innovations, including AI
- Reduced operational and security risks
Especially in the context of S/4HANA Cloud and the increasing cloudification of SAP landscapes, Clean Core is the key to remaining flexible and future-proof.
What are the differences within SAP's Clean Core concept?
According to SAP’s definition, there are various levels of maturity within the Clean Core. SAP has replaced the previous 3-tier model with a level-based concept that evaluates extensions based on their upgrade security and proximity to the standard:
- Level A: Maximum upgrade security, “Clean Core” in the strictest sense.
- Level B: Generally upgrade stable, but without a “Stability Contract”
- Level C: Increased risk during upgrades
- Level D: Extensions not recommended. Highest risk.

What extensibility models are available in Clean Core?
SAP distinguishes between two basic extensibility models: On-stack and side-by-side. Both describe different technological approaches to extending SAP S/4HANA.
The on-stack approach describes extensions that are developed and executed directly within the SAP S/4HANA system. With the side-by-side approach, however, extensions are created outside the SAP S/4HANA system and are developed and operated on a separate platform.
In the context of SAP Clean Core, the goal is to keep the core ERP system (“Core”) as free as possible from individual modifications in order to simplify upgrades and accelerate innovation. The guiding principle is: Side-by-side where possible – on-stack where necessary. This is precisely where mobisys comes in, implementing targeted on-stack extensions when tight integration with SAP processes is required.
- Transaction consistency
- Frequent access to Data and changes to data from standard SAP tables and fields, resulting in numerous round trips.
- Extend the SAP data model
- Customize a standard business process with custom logic within a logical work unit by implementing the extension point of an SAP application.

What SAP certifications are available through Clean Core?
With the Clean Core strategy, the certification of extensions and add-ons is also coming into sharper focus. Through the “SAP Certified for Clean Core with SAP S/4HANA Cloud” certification, SAP clearly highlights which partner solutions actively support the Clean Core principles. This is intended to make it immediately clear to customers that a certified extension meets key quality criteria – in particular, upgrade security, the use of officially released APIs, and long-term future-proofing.
According to SAP, this certification category means that a partner extension can be tested against defined Clean Core criteria. “Clean Core” is a term coined by SAP and describes a modern, cloud-compliant ERP system that contains as little technical overhead or older customizations as possible.
For companies using SAP solutions, the certification typically indicates the following:
- Level A Add-ons: optimally integrated, highly future-proof, and fully Clean Core-compliant.
- Level B Add-ons: stable and reliable solutions with solid architecture.
- Level C/D Add-ons: should be modernized or replaced in the medium term to support Clean Core goals.
How can you achieve Clean Core?
SAP recommends two strategies:
Stay Clean
- Always implement new enhancements according to Clean Core principles.
- Governance, clear guidelines, and ongoing developer training are crucial.
Get Clean
- Gradually modernize existing in-house developments and legacy systems.
- Measure technical debt using the RISE with SAP Methodology Dashboard (in SAP Cloud ALM) and reduce it in a targeted manner.
Clean Core is not a one-time project, but a continuous process. Those who adopt Clean Core early on benefit from greater agility, lower costs, and a future-proof SAP landscape. mobisys supports you on this journey. We have consistently aligned our product development with Clean Core. With our new product, MSB nova, we offer you the ideal tool for optimally mapping your mobile SAP processes within Clean Core.
Secure investment for the future
